The Curaçao Museum

Curaçao

Our next port of call (after a day at sea) turned out to be Curaçao! Our families had arranged another fun day of activities on the island.  Curaçao is a really cool island, part of the Dutch Caribbean! That means it was colonized by Dutch settlers. On Curaçao, they speak Dutch, Papiamentu, and English.  Our guide taught us a few words in Papiamentu, which I'll share with you later.  Papiamentu is a creole language, which means it's a mix of languages- in this case, Dutch, Spanish, and African languages.

Our first stop in Curaçao was The Curaçao Museum in Willemstad. It was really cool- literally! The museum had big, breezy rooms.  Brooke and I enjoyed looking at the historical furniture, the carillon of bells, and the different airplanes and train cars.

Outside the museum, there was this big stack of rocks with this cool glass sculpture on top! We didn't know much about it, but Brooke and I thought it was beautiful. What do you think? Do you like it?

A favorite tradition in my family is sending postcards when we travel. Brooke and I were excited to see this old fashioned airplane, which used to deliver mail between islands! Can you imagine being out over the sea, all by yourself, in a little airplane? Whoa! Mail pilots were very brave, I think.

The grounds of the museum also had different train cars. Here I am with Brooke on an engine- pretty sweet! I loved learning about Curaçao's history.  Today, Curaçao has about 150,000 people- about the same as my neighborhood back home in New York City!

Would you ever want to visit a Dutch island? I thought it was pretty cool, especially learning about Papiamentu! Te aworo! (That means "bye!" in Papiamentu!)
