Inky à Paris!

Paris

The morning after my parents and I arrived back in London from our trip to Norwich, we woke up early to catch the Eurostar train to Paris! I felt very sophisticated as I had just been in Paris one week earlier to go to Disneyland! I napped and read a NatGeo Kids magazine on the train. Before long, we had arrived at Paris's Gare du Nord! My family and I shouldered our backpacks and walked up, up, up to our hotel in Montmartre! Montmartre is a neighborhood and hill in Paris's 18th arrondissement, or district.  I love the movie Amélie and was very excited when my parents let me choose where to stay in Paris!

I had done some research ahead of time to find different spots from the film. After we dropped off our bags at the hotel, my family set out to take photos around Montmartre, where the Amélie movie takes place. First off was the Collignon grocery! The shop sells a variety of Amélie-themed postcards; I bought some to send to friends. I also got an ice cold Fanta, since it is hard work climbing up and down all the stairs in Montmartre! One stereotype about Parisians is that they can be rude, but one thing I learned is to always greet people before you begin to speak to them- and it worked. Everyone I encountered was very nice.

After we made our purchases at the grocery, my family walked west to Café des 2 Moulins on Rue Lepic. This café, whose name means "Café of the two windmills," is where Amélie works in the film! There is even a large portrait of her in the dining room, which you can see behind me in the photo above.  Even though I'd just had a soda, I really wanted to have something at the café. I chose a diabolo menthe, or peppermint soda! Another favorite French movie of mine, Diabolo Menthe, takes place in Paris in the 1970s.  I ordered the soda in its honor.

My moms and I love baguettes, the long French bread you can see behind me in this photo.  My mom looked up several top-rated bakeries and we tried different ones every day.  The bakeries all have different closing days, but there is always at least one open nearby on any given day.   The bread was so delicious! I liked to have mine with hot chocolate.

I love Montmartre! I'm really happy I picked the neighborhood, even though it was a lot of stair-climbing during our trip. After we wandered around the neighborhood for a few hours, it was time to head to our next destination in the city. I'll save that for my next post though!

Have you ever seen the movie Amélie? Would you want to visit Montmartre?

  1. Salut Inky, it's so cool to see you in my neighborhood! I wish I had been able to meet up with you! I love living in Montmartre - I definitely get my exercise in just walking up those hills every day. You would think I would get tired of the movie Amélie, but it's one of my favorites. Amélie is my middle name after all! I have never seen Diabolo Menthe, though! I will have to check it out.
