Fairview Great House on St. Kitts

St. Kitts

The second port of call on my Caribbean cruise with Brooke was Basseterre, St. Kitts! St Kitts and its sister island, Nevis, are covered in beautiful rainforest. Our families booked a busy day on St Kitts, starting with a visit to Fairview Great House. The Fairview Great House is a colonial plantation built by the French over 300 years ago! Many families have lived there since, including Virginia Woolf's great grandfather! Now it is a tourist attraction, where you can tour the gardens or taste rum. Brooke and I are not old enough to try rum, so we wandered the grounds looking at the flowers and the view.

This sign in front of the house features a monkey.  Brooke and I were hopeful that we'd encounter a monkey, but sadly, we did not.  Still, we enjoyed looking at everything!

St. Kitts

It was very warm on St. Kitts, but the different water features at Fairview Great House, like this little pond, made it seem cooler. The breeze flowing through all the lush greenery was nice too.

The flowers everywhere were beautiful. I loved the pinks and reds! Aren't these red flowers pretty? They make my hair poufs look like flowers too.

I enjoyed visiting Fairview Great House. Brooke and I were lucky to get to wander the grounds.  We were also excited to find a flag of St. Kitts and Nevis to pose with! The green part of the flag symbolizes the fertile land of the islands, the black represents the African heritage of the people, and the red the blood lost in the struggles for freedom/independence.  Each star stands for one of the two islands.

Brooke and I were happy to have the opportunity to visit Fairview. While it's hard to imagine enslaved people working on the plantations in the colonial era, it's important to remember those parts of human history so we never repeat them.

Have you ever visited a beautiful place with a sad history?
