Copenhagen is a magical city. One place that makes it particularly amazing is Tivoli! It's the second-oldest amusement park in the entire world. (The oldest one is also in Denmark!) Tivoli is full of rides, cafés, shops, and concert venues. I first read about it in Lois Lowry's book, Number the Stars. I love it when I can actually visit the places I've read about it books!
Brooke and I spent our first few hours in Denmark walking through Strøget, a pedestrian mall in Copenhagen that leads to Tivoli. When we finally made it to Tivoli, we were so excited! In the distance, we could see a swing ride rising high above the park. (You can see it faintly on the left in this picture.) Screams of laughter echoed through the park. We had made it!
Tivoli is full of beautiful fountains. Even though it was a hot day, it felt cool because of the sounds of running water throughout the park. It was so nice to be spending a day at the end of summer in such a beautiful place!
At Tivoli, it seemed like every kid had a giant balloon! Brooke found the balloon seller- the stall was so cute! There was a basket, like on a hot air balloon, with big, beautiful balloons tethered to it. It reminded us of the house in the movie Up! How could not climb into the basket for a photo?
The balloons were huge! There were cartoon characters, animals, and fun shapes. Brooke and I both wanted one, but our parents reminded us that our next stop wasn't very balloon-friendly. We reluctantly left the balloon stall and resumed our walk through the park.
One of the best parts of traveling is food! Brooke and I both wanted to try all the desserts. We loved all the prettily-painted signs, flowers, and Danish flags. Tivoli is such a fun place to be! We ended up getting gelato! I had pistachio. Yum!
Brooke and I were really excited to find the Hyggehjulet! Hygge is the Scandinavia concept of warmth and coziness- the Hyggehjulet is a wheel of fortune game where you can win chocolate! The two of us, especially Brooke, LOVE chocolate! I tried a mocha bar. Delicious!
Once we were full of chocolate, we decided to go on a little horse ride. The horse was painted so nicely and there was room for us both. Hurrah! The ride reminded me of a much more elegant version of the little dinosaur rides outside the laundromat in our neighborhood!
It wouldn't be an amusement park day without over-indulging in sweets! A Danish favorite is salty, strong licorice. At first, I really, really did not care for the taste. But as I ate the rest of my portion, I realized it was pretty good. I'm glad I tried something new.
Tivoli has concert venues in addition to rides, balloons, and lots of candy. We didn't have time to see a performance, but I was tickled to see that the evening's performance was by the New York City Ballet! Brooke and I came all the way across the Atlantic Ocean, only to find a piece of home in the middle of Tivoli. Cool!
Tivoli is definitely a magical place that's worth seeing if you're in Denmark! Brooke and I were pretty tired after wandering through the park for a few hours, so we decided to head back to our hotel and rest for the next day's adventure. I'm so glad we got to see Tivoli; it was amazing!
