Zoos can be really sad.  Even if zookeepers do their best work to make sure that the animals are happy, they are still not in their wild habitats. However, with climate change, life in the zoo can be safer than life in the wild! Still, the animals in zoos are ambassadors for their species. They  make sure the public knows how important conservation is for everyone!

While I was on my trip to the Pacific Northwest, Brooke asked if I wanted to visit the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. I said yes, because I love seeing animals!  We woke up early and headed south to Tacoma to visit the different creatures living there. Of course, the animals themselves were very shy as it was very, very hot out! We had fun in the aquarium though!

I liked this map in the aquarium that showed how much water there is near Seattle. Wow! I live near the Atlantic Ocean, but I don't actually see it all that often unless my family is at the beach. I love how the water is almost always nearby when I am visiting Brooke in Seattle.

There was a cool display, also in the aquarium, that showed some of the important dates in ocean conservation.  The Kyoto Protocol was an international agreement (a decision shared by many countries) to reduce emissions into the air.  Emissions make the ocean more acidic, which is very bad for sea life.  Sadly, the United States did not join in signing.  Luckily, the state and tribes in Washington have worked together to make sure that marine habitats are protected.

Back outside the aquarium, Brooke and I found a snack stand! They were selling something called Fudge Puppies. A fudge puppy is a waffle on a stick with ice cream and caramel sauce on top. Yum! Of course, it was so warm that it fell right off the stick. Oops!

After we finished our Fudge Puppy and bought postcards in the gift shop, we decided to head home to Seattle. We were so hot! It was very sunny and bright. When we got home, we took naps - just like the animals at the zoo! I'm glad to know that there are so many people working to defeat climate change and to work toward conservation.  I hope our planet will be a safe place for animals in the future!
