Iceland's Golden Circle, Part I

Iceland Day 1

On our Disney Magic trip, we had a sea day between Norway and our next port- Reykjavik, Iceland! I was very excited because Iceland has been a dream of mine for a long time. We met our guide for a day touring the Golden Circle- a ring of natural attractions in southwest Iceland.  Our guide took us in a big white jeep from the port to our first stop- a waterfall! We were heading to other waterfalls, but this one would be our first.  Unfortunately, I didn't write down its name and Icelandic is so difficult for me to remember!

Iceland Day 1

After our brief stop at the first waterfall, we headed up to Geysir National Park. The word geyser actually comes from the Iceland word, geysir!  It was a pretty busy, but also beautiful, park.  The countryside was so green! We had to be sure not to step past the barriers or you can get easily burnt by the boiling water. That's what a geyser is- a hot spring that erupts in steam! Geysir is the biggest geyser in Iceland.

Iceland Day 1

Fifty meters south of Geysir there is another geyser, called Strokkur. It erupts more often than Geysir, though it's not as big. In this photo, you can actually see Strokkur erupting behind me, though it's hard to see because the sky is white too!

Iceland Day 1

After we had a quick snack at the Geysir café (and bought postcards!), we headed up to Gullfoss- the Golden Waterfall! Can you see the rainbow in the sky above the waterfall behind me? It was so beautiful! The falls are part of the last bit of the river Hvita, before it ends in a gorge below the falls.

Iceland Day 1

Brooke and I loved visiting Gullfoss! There were a lot of people there looking at the falls, but it was still a magical experience.

Iceland Day 1
One thing I bought was a little Icelandic flag! I was proud to wave it from the cliff above the gorge.  Iceland's flag is red, white, and blue- just like the American flag.  The cross represents Christianity.  Each of the colors has a special meaning too! The blue represents the sky and the sea, the red represents Iceland's volcanoes, and the white symbolizes the glaciers and snow.

Iceland Day 1

Up above the waterfall, there was a boardwalk and a bunch of rocks to climb! Here's a photo of Brooke trying to get on top of a big rock! Doesn't she look like she's trying really hard?

Iceland Day 1

Brooke and I have so much fun exploring the world together!  We both think it's very funny when people think we are twins or sisters.  We have a similar sense of adventure and love to explore new places.

Iceland Day 1

Before long, it was time to move onward to the next part of our Golden Circle adventure. We took one last photo above the falls and headed north together in the Jeep.

Have you ever visited a waterfall or a geyser? What did you think?

  2. Loving your trip! thank you so very much for sharing your adventures with us.

Waterfalls! We live relatively close to Bushkill Falls and have hiked there a couple times. I'd like to go again and take Melody or one of her sisters. Then a while back I saw Niagara Falls from both sides! WOW!
