Inky Reads Books!

Inky Reads!

Autumn has come to New York City! It's still pretty warm, but it definitely feels like fall.  So fall, in fact, that my parents and I have gotten a new year of homeschooling underway.  There are a lot of things I need to homeschool the way my family does it, but there is one thing that is more valuable than anything else.  What is it you might ask?

It's my library card!  I am lucky to live in a city with lots and lots of libraries.  My local library has many, many branches. The closest one is just down the street.  I read a lot, so sometimes I get library fines for returning my books late. Oops! Luckily, the library has a program where kids can go to the library and "read down" their fees.  For every certain period of time you read, some of your fees disappear! Awesome, right? I am also lucky to own many of my very own books as well.

Here's how Mama found me this afternoon! Both of my parents loved The Giver.  They gave me my very own copy recently and I read all of it as soon as I could! It is also a movie. My parents have a policy that if a book has a movie, I have to read the book first.  I am excited to go see the movie, but I am worried that it will be too different from the book. Has that ever happened to you?

Now that I've finished The Giver, I'm also reading one of Mama's childhood favorites- Swallows and Amazons! My Dedushka (grandfather) read this book as a boy too. He gave a copy to Mama when she was my age. Mama and I chose my copy at Waterstones when we visited London at New Year for my aunt's wedding. I'm the third generation in my family to read this series! It's so, so good. I'm really excited because my friend Nora has also read Swallows and Amazons; we are going to Skype to discuss it the next time our parents let us have a Skype session.

So that is what I've been up to lately! Reading and enjoying the beginning of the new season. Have you read any good books lately? What were they? What is your favorite book?

  1. Hey Inky,

I just love your library system! I really like that kids have an opportunity to "read down" their library fines. We need something like that here as we always seem to be late turning in our library books and movies.

I actually just read The Giver! Like you, I really prefer reading the book before seeing the movie, so I have not seen the movie yet. I really hope they do the story justice because I absolutely loved it and can't read the companion novel.

My favorite book is The Da Vinci Code, but - surprise! - I actually like the movie more. I'm sure Audrey Tautou acting in it has a lot to do with that fact. :P

    1. Jeez, I can't proofread tonight! I meant "can't WAIT to read the companion novel"!

    2. Hello Hello Sophie!

Reading down your fines is a great program. Movies are the real killer- they're $3.00 a day if you turn them in late!

I wish we could go see The Giver together and compare notes.

I haven't read The Da Vinci Code, my mom say it might be a bit grown up for me yet.

      Love,
      Inky

  2. Hello there, Inky! I wish they had the reading down your fines system for adults. :P I don't read too much myself, unless it is something informational for a hobby or particular interest of mine. I do know that movies taken off of books can be so different. I will never forget the Count of Monet Cristo - a book I like - and how disappointed I was! I hope you won't be when you see the Giver.

    1. Hi Ghostie!
I hope I'm not disappointed either. Have you read the Giver yourself?

  3. Hi ya Inky! Susanna here. I'm happy to see you reading. I love to read. I used to visit the library a lot but the neighborhood branch closed and the main branch isn't convenient for visiting often. That's OK because I have lots to read at home. They have read down your fines here too. I don't think I've ever seen a movie made from a favorite book. My guardian doesn't like those except for a few exceptions. I'm glad to see you reading challenged books like The Giver. I hope you have another one for next week to celebrate Banned Books Week. Your friend, Susanna
    p.s I have a blog now too! http://susannasadventuresintime.blogspot.com

    1. Hi Susanna! You and I are both big readers. I am guessing your favorites, like mine, are historical fiction. I will have to find a list of books so I can pick a banned book to read this week!

Thanks for telling me about your blog!

      Love,
      Inky

  5. Hi Inky,
We're waiting excitedly for the big new downtown branch of the library to open, might not be until november. The old branch that it is replacing is now closed.
As for good books, I read the latest book in the spinoff series from Vampire Academy. It is kind of an adult book but I enjoyed it because my namesake shows up sometimes. Some of the girls in my household also read the ever after high books this summer and liked them. As for movies being really different from books, that has happened me before too.

  6. Ella Inky!
My town's library is pretty small. I don't have my own library card because a kid has to be 11+ (I'm 10) to get one. So my mama just checks out books for me until then.

I REALLY enjoy the Chronicles of Narnia. It is my favorite book series ever! My favorite in the series is Prince Caspian. Yeah, it happened to me with Narnia. They had a HUGE battle and all that, and they raided the castle and left out some really good parts in Trumpkin's story! It was sad. :( (In the Prince Caspian movie.)

  7. Hi, Inky!
I love this post about the books and library. When I was younger I'd go wander through the stacks at our local library. Many times my mom would find me sitting in an aisle reading right in front of the spot I found a book.

It's good to read the book before seeing the movie. I confess that there are some that I have not read (The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit), but most times I have read the book on which a movie is based. Sometimes I am disappointed by the changes, so now I tend not to read right before I see the movie - that way I'm not quite so attached to how it is supposed to be and can embrace how it has been interpreted. Then there are those times when it is so far off I just shake my head - I was really annoyed the first time I saw Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince...it was soooo not the book. Now I don't mind.

    Keep up the good work.

  8. Hi Inky!
I love The Giver--it's my absolute favorite book. I always get scared movies are going to be too different from the books as well! The book is usually better anyway. :)
