The Met- Again!

Inky & Summer at The Met

New York City is big- very big. I've lived here for five years and still haven't seen most of it. Still, there are some places I love to visit again and again. The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) is one of them. Even though I'd been there a few weeks ago with my friends Savannah and Hodel, I was thrilled when Summer asked to go there too! Summer wanted to see The Coe Collection of American Indian art. I had never visited that exhibit, so I happily agreed. Today was rainy and cool, the perfect weather for museum going, so off we went! We found the Coe Collection quite easily- it's right on the first floor.

Inky & Summer at The Met

I especially loved the Maya carvings. They were so cool! This stela had a beautiful carving of a jaguar. Someday I would love to visit Maya ruins. That would be an awesome trip! Have you ever read any of the books in the Royal Princess Diaries series? I loved the one about the Lady of Palenque. Royal life in the height of the Maya civilization sounded so exciting.

Inky & Summer at The Met

Summer liked this bag decorated with beautiful beadwork. She is very patient- I think she would be excellent if she learned to do beadwork herself. She quietly looked at all the items in the Coe Collection, while I ran ahead and explored Mesoamerica, South America, and the Pacific Islands!

Inky & Summer at The Met

This is a really cool mask from the Pacific Northwest. I love the art from that part of the world- it is so beautiful. I was very lucky to visit Washington state in 2006, but I would love to go back and I would especially love to visit British Columbia someday!

Inky & Summer at The Met

Even though we went to the Met to see the Coe Collection, I told Summer that we could not leave without visiting William the Hippo in the Egyptian wing. He's the mascot of the museum and he's super cute- and bright blue! Summer really liked him; I was glad I insisted we visit!

Inky & Summer at The Met

After we saw William, we decided to leave. Since the day was rainy, the museum was crowded with lots of people who, like us, decided the Met was the perfect place to spend a rainy day. Summer is from a smaller city, so she got a bit overwhelmed by the crowds. Luckily, we had another destination in mind- but I'll save that story for my next blog entry. Summer and I really enjoyed seeing the art from all over the world. Have you ever been to an art museum? What was your favorite thing about it?

In this entry I'm wearing: shirt from Dynamite Threads. Summer is wearing a button-up shirt from Liberty Jane.

  1. Hi Inky!

I was just n Washington state, and went to the Tillicum Village on Blake Island, and saw the dance done w/ that mask. In fact I even met the person who carved it, (he was in the process of carving another one). Those masks are really heavy, between 30-40 lbs!

    1. Hi Hardygirl66,
That is so cool! My mama got to help carve a totem pole in Washington State when she was a girl- Pacific Northwestern art is so beautiful!

  2. Hey Inky,

I've read several books in The Royal Diaries series, but not Lady of Palenque. That one sounds fascinating! I'll have to check it out someday. I've read the books about Marie Antoinette, Isabel of Castile, Eleanor d'Aquitaine, Catherine the Great, and Anastasia. I'm pretty sure my favorite was Catherine the Great's!

I know I've been to The Met, but I'm blanking on whether I've been to any other art museums while I've been in the US. Of course, the Louvre is special to me. We'd go there quite often when Juliette and I were little. Our mom took us to the ballet; our dad took us to the museums. All in all, we had a very cultured childhood!

    1. Hi Sophie,
I haven't read most of the books in the series, but the ones I've read are really good. I loved the Catherine the Great book too!

I would love to go to the Louvre someday!

  4. Salut, Inky!
I'd love to check out the Met someday! The exhibits look spectacular!
I've been to many museums in France, but I've been to the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille the most, obviously. I also thought the Centre Pompidou in Paris was neat since it is rather "modern" and not what one typically thinks of when they think of French museums.
I haven't visited any US museums, but there are many I want to check out in DC.
I also like touring old homes.

    1. Hi Sabine!
You would love the Met. Of course, a lot of the French paintings and sculptures are duplicates of ones in France. I didn't realize painters would make multiple copies of the same paintings, but I guess they did!

I have been to the National Gallery in DC to see the Gauguin exhibit- he's my favorite painter!

Old homes sound fun too. There are lots of rooms in the Met with cool furniture from different time periods in history- I think you'd really like those!

  5. Awesome as usual, you are so lucky to live right there where you can visit all those wonderful places. We have loved going to museums, and especially the one with you this spring, that was my first real museum and so much fun.

The boy Kyle above in the comments, that is Nana's boy our cousin. You met Nana when we went to the museum and stuff. He just started his blog and they are having fun with it.

Great to see you and Summer are having fun together.

  6. You're so lucky! I've always wanted to go to the Met! The only art museum I've been to is the one at Bowdoin College--which isn't very big. My favorite part was probably the ancient statues and artifacts from the Middle East. I always think it's awesome to think that those pieces of art have lasted thousands of years!

    1. Hi Sophia & Emma,
A William collection sounds so cool! He's so cute! They had stuffed animals of him for sale, but my moms said I have too many stuffies already. Stinkbugs!

    1. Hi Alicia,

Thank you for the compliment! I got them at American Girl Place. They're part of a store exclusive hair care kit called "Adorable Accents." I believe the pack was $8.
