Flushing Meadows Park

Recently, my friend Coral and I went to Flushing Meadows Park in Corona with her au pair. (An au pair is like a nanny.  Coral's dad flies back and forth to New Zealand often, so her au pair takes care of her.)

Flushing Meadows Park

Coral has been waiting to hear about a summer intensive ballet program. I've been talking with her a lot about ballet.  Coral is a very dedicated dancer.  She was a regional associate back in New Zealand with their national ballet school. Now, she goes to the JKO School.  However, she loves my school and applied to a summer intensive there.  I'm still in the Children's Division, so I don't have ballet class in the summer.  This year I'm dancing in a ballet though- seven performances starting in a little over a week.

Coral auditioned for the summer intensive program at my ballet school, but she hasn't heard back yet. They say you usually hear right away, so she's pretty worried.  Do you think you guys could cross your fingers for her? It's really important to her- she wants to be a ballerina and she works very hard in her classes.  I haven't decided if I want to stay with ballet when I get older. It's hard work and sometimes I get bored during class. Other times, I wish I could stay home and play instead of taking the subway all the way to ballet class. Do you think that's normal? I feel a little bit guilty since my school is well-known and most kids who audition don't get in.

Coral is really nice- she knows all about what it's like to be a kid who dances. She's been feeling sad lately because it's been a year since she was back in New Zealand. Luckily, one of her friends might be moving here. Her name is Pippa and she's also a dancer! She's coming to NYC because her cousin, who is half Australian and half American, lives upstate.

So that's the news 'round these parts. How is the start of your summer? What do you think I should do about ballet- should I keep going? I love performing, but sometimes class is so long!

  4. I took 4 years off ballet when I was 10 1/2- 14 im back now. It's perfectly norm to get a little bored but if I could do it again I would have only taken 2 years off. Try taking a different dance class inky, a gitl at my school is teaching modern to me and another and I LOVE it!

    1. Hi Chloe and Lanie!

Luckily I do have the summer off from ballet classes. My school is very strict and won't let us take class at other schools unless they approve it first. That's one reason I didn't apply to go to a summer intensive.

      Modern looks awesome though!

  5. Hi Inky,
I agree with Lanie. You might want to try another kind of dance for a while, but if you still want to take ballet maybe you could switch to a school with shorter classes.

P.S. I am getting an AG doll for my birthday, and you have lots of cool stuff on your blog. Can you tell me where you find it? Thank you!!!

    1. Hi Anna,

Could you tell me what in particular you want to find? I get my toys and belongings all over the place. If you tell me specifically what you like, I can tell you where I got it.

      Inky!

    2. I'd like to know where you get your Uglydolls but also where you get some of the stuff in your bedroom (where can you buy a shelf that tiny?!).
      Thanks,
      Anna

    3. Uglydolls are available at premium toy stores, though Toys R Us carries a smaller line of them. My shelves were handmade by my mom from lattice wood and brackets purchased at Home Depot.

  7. Inky,
I am in the same pickle, ballet classes are boring and WAY to stressful; what I am going to do is join something similar to ballet, but much more artistic, rhythmic gymnastics. If you feel bored to the point of extinction with ballet, join another sport, activity, type of dance, etc. But if you still like ballet keep on going, reach for the next level, only stop when you badly need to. I hope my advice helps you!

  8. Hey Inky,

I hope Coral gets in! Juliette has applied for a summer intensive around here, which is obviously not as competitive as your school in NYC. She'll probably get in, for that reason. Still, she's nervous about going anyway and can relate to how Coral is feeling right about now.

I stopped dancing partly because I was bored with it and wanted to explore other interests. That and I didn't see myself with real talent! But, I don't know if you should quit. You're so dedicated and so talented, and anyway, you'd probably regret stopping class. I do...and I'm not nearly as good as you. I've already resumed dancing - for fun, not for a professional career or anything. I guess, if you really need a break, you could take the summer off? I don't know how your ballet school would feel about that, though.

    1. Hi Anonymous,

      We're wearing:

Inky: shirt by Pleasant Piper, shorts by Liberty Jane, sandals by American Girl

Coral: shirt by Royal Doll Boutique, skirt/leggings/shoes by American Girl

      I hope that helps!

    3. Wait where did you get your shirt?? Did Piper's mom make it for you? And does Liberty Jane still have that pattern for the shorts?

    4. Mel,
Piper's mom made my shirt for me. The shorts are purchased from Liberty Jane Clothing, not made from a pattern.

  12. Inky, I think it is perfectly normal. It is impossible not to get bored when doing something you love, because your doing it so much, sometimes, it gets a bit old. Just remember- "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence" When you think you are bored, just remember the kids who didn't get in when you are wishing you were somewhere else. Just follow your gut and you'll do what's right. Your gut is always right. LOL
