Cape Cod National Seashore!

It seems like summer is ending all too quickly. Even though I'm homeschooled, I still think of summer ending because my parents go back to work. There was a lot of traveling in my family this summer (I went to Ukraine, Washington DC, and Ohio), but we still had time for a summer tradition- Cape Cod National Seashore!

Cape Cod 2011

We drove up to Cape Cod on a Thursday night. The car ride was great. We sang along to Decemberists songs all the way from New York City to Provincetown. "The Mariner's Revenge Song" always puts me in the mood for the cape. (Check out the link to see a cool music video of the song.)  We pitched our tent at my family's favorite campground- in fact, my great-grandpa camped at the same place when he was my age!

Cape Cod 2011

We spent our first day hanging out at Head of the Meadow Beach. Even though the water was really, really cold, I had a great time. I even saw seals swimming just off shore!

Cape Cod 2011

The next day we hiked out on the Provincetown breakwater. See the long line of rocks behind me? The breakwater extends for about a mile and a half. This year, I was determined to make it all the way to the other end- the very tip of Cape Cod! It took me about an hour, but I did it! The hardest part is jumping from rock to rock- it's not an even path.

Cape Cod 2011

Here I am at the tip! Can you see Cape Cod Bay and Provincetown behind me? My family celebrated our breakwater hike's success with artichoke pizza at Joe Dough's in Provincetown. I love visiting P-town because it's full of families like mine- with two moms or two dads. There were tons of other kids there too. It felt great knowing that I could walk up to any one of them and know they would understand what it's like to be in a two mom family.

Cape Cod 2011

We stayed on Cape Cod for four wonderful days. We even got to go to our favorite breakfast buffet at Laura &Tony's Kitchen! It was a short trip, but it's always nice to go to a favorite vacation spot.  A few years ago, my friend Violet came along to camp on the cape. She couldn't go this year, but my moms said I could bring a friend along next year! Does anyone feel like going to Cape Cod next summer?

Do you have a favorite vacation spot? Is there anywhere you like to go where you feel that you and your family totally fit in?

  1. Wow Inky! How fun! My family really enjoys camping and hiking in a place called the Wichita Mountains! One time, Rachel Noel, her aunt, and I got to bike ride all the way there! It was really fun! I've never been to Cape Cod but it really looks fun! It sounds like there's lots of good eating places and hiking destinations as well!
    Sincerely,
    Emmie Jo

  2. Inky .. we would love to go camping with you at Cape Cod sometime, but I am not sure Mama would let either of us girls go there without her. LOL!! We stick pretty close to Mama.

Mama has been to Cape Cod, years ago, and would love to take us girls back with her sometime. It is so kewl that you got to hike to the point of Cape Cod, it would be awesome to see that.

It has to be hard to live in a two Mom house sometimes. We are in a one mom house right now because Mama has no one special in her life, but we would be a two mom house too. It is hard when you cannot find someone who really fits in together with you.

  3. Hey Inky. This is Bree. :-)

Sounds like a fun trip, and we love your photos! It's so neat that your family has been going to the same place for so long.

Glad you got your vacation in before the hurricane!

Our guardian used to live in Massachusetts, the Cape Ann area.

Our favourite place to go for vacation is Rochester NY. Our guardian and some of the rest of us have extended family there. It's a neat city with cool historical and outdoor stuff to see and do - and some great food! :-)

We also really like Spokane WA, but we haven't been there in awhile. Maybe next summer!

    Love,
    Bree

  4. Bree again. Sorry for the double-comment but I forgot to mention something.

Our family knows what it's like to have a different family structure, too. Me and the other Green girls live with a guardian who isn't our mother. Summer and Kiwi live with their adult siblings. We're all kinda one big family, and just naturally call each other sisters interchangeably whether we're part of the Green household or the Rose household.

We get a lot of confused looks. I'm not sure our family arrangement would be normal anywhere - but we're really happy. That's what matters, right?

    Love,
    Bree

  5. Hi Inky! It's been a while since I wrote you!

Cape Code looks awesome! I'm so happy you had so much fun! I'd love to go with you we would have so much fun! The only problem is that just like Taryn, I would have to go with my human -because she sticks to me like a booger.- *giggles*

P-town must have been great, meeting other kids with families like yours must have been super! I only have Alex in my life, you're so lucky to have two moms. Someday I wish Alex will find her soulmate, and then I will have a family like yours :)

    Hugs,
    Ava

  6. Thanks everyone for your comments! I totally understand about not being able to travel alone. I've only gone to see Violet and Piper by myself, and that's because our parents are all good friends too.

Emmie Jo, your biking vacation sounds awesome! I don't have a bike because it can be really dangerous to ride one in New York City. It's sad, but almost every day there is a story in the news about a biker being run over. My moms say I can only ride a bike in the park, and that's not often enough to justify such a big purchase.

Taryn, I hope you and your family find your other mom soon!

Bree, I love your big, happy family. I'm an only child, so I have to arrange for playdates if I want someone to have fun with me. Do the girls in your family share bedrooms?

Ava, thanks for commenting! Having one parent is great too. I didn't mean to sound like I was bragging when I talk about both my moms. I'm sure you will meet the other future members of your family soon!

  7. Hey, this is Bree.

Yeah, we definitely share rooms! We live in a city (not as big as your city, though...) and so our place really isn't that big. It can get chaotic at times.

I basically grew up like an only child before this; I had my sister Fiona but we didn't usually live together once our parents split, and she ended up in foster care and I didn't.

This household has been really different for me... but I love having a big family now that I'm used to it!

    Love,
    Bree

  9. Susanna isn't allowed to travel alone yet but maybe some day her cousin [doesn't exist yet in doll form] will go to Cape Cod the way I used to when I was your age. I'm glad you went before the hurricane. It was still pretty windy this summer. Susanna says she's glad you had fun. Maybe next summer you can visit Susanna and we can take you to see the Red Pandas at the zoo here.
