Butterflies in Utah!

Guess where I am - in Utah! But this time I'm not visiting Violence, I'm visiting my new friend Piper!

We have lots of fun plans for my visit, but Piper is sad because the weather has been so cold. Lots of snow and rain! She was starting to get really restless being stuck inside, so I suggested that we should do something to bring Spring to us, instead. It was funny how excited that got her!

She pulled out a bunch of paper, markers, colored pencils, paints - anything she could find.

We brainstormed ideas, and finally decided to make our own butterfly conservatory - inside!

Paper butterflies are really easy to make. You fold paper in half like a book, trace out a butterfly shape and cut it out. Then you can decorate it!

Soon our ideas started flying. I'll show you how to make a really neat butterfly out of tissue paper!

You need two pieces of pretty tissue paper, about the same size.

11

Stack the papers together, and trim the sides in a curvy s shape.

12

Then you need something that will hold its shape well. I used a twist-tie, but a pipe cleaner would work really well, too.

Bend it in half and slip your tissue paper inside. You can crinkle it up a little bit to show the two sets of wings. Then pinch your twist tie at the top and bend the ends into curvy antennae!

We taped all the butterflies in Piper's room around her desk. I even hung one from the ceiling!

15

Now it's like it's Spring inside! I hope Spring comes outside soon, too.

I'm having so much fun here with Piper. I can't wait to show you what we do next!

  5. Hi Inky!

It feels so weird sitting in your bedroom without you here. I miss you! However, I'm glad that you and Piper are having fun in Utah.

The butterflies that you two have made really look nice in Piper's room. Hopefully you'll be able to go outside and see some real butterflies soon.

Can't wait to see what you two do next!

  10. The doll sized crayons, paint, and tape can be found at Party City in the goody bag area. The colored pencils are from a local Japanese bookstore.
