Yesterday afternoon I met up with my friend Maiki for an afternoon in Central Park. Maiki, who likes to be called Mike, is from Hawaii! She's in New York with her family and called me up to see if I wanted to hang out.
I met Maiki at her hotel and we walked through Central Park to the zoo. There was a big snowstorm in NYC just after Christmas, so the park looked like a winter wonderland. Maiki was so funny- she'd never been anywhere so cold before and she kept telling me how cool it was so see all the snow.
Once we got to the zoo, we had to check out the sea lion tank. It was feeding time, so the keepers were throwing fish to the sea lions. Did you know they swallow them whole?
Mike and I walked all through the zoo, but most of the animals were inside. It's a good thing I have a membership or I would have felt badly about spending money to see only a very few animals. The red panda, Amaya, wasn't out, but we did see one of the snow leopards. Even the polar bears were hiding- but we did catch a glimpse of them in the corner of their enclosure.
There is a pretty little stream running through the zoo. Mike took a picture of me next to it. I thought about being one of those people who call themselves "polar bears." They go swimming outside in the middle of winter. Pretty tough, right?
There are big sculptures of eagles all around the sea lion pool. We decided to climb on one to see the view. We were queens of the zoo!
After the zoo, Maiki walked me to the subway so I could go home; she walked back to her hotel. We had a great day hanging out together. And guess what- she asked me to come visit her in Hawaii!!!! Isn't that cool?
